The red-throated diver. Divers are primitive water birds usually known in the USA as loons. They are found in the high latitudes of the northern hemisphere where they inhabit estuaries, lakes, and wetland areas. Their eerie, wailing calls evoke the very essence of wild, uninhabited country. Divers can reach depths of up to 60 m/200 ft in pursuit of their fish prey.
